چکیده

Metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) studies of the optical brightener Tinopal-CBS (4,40distyrylbiphenyl sulfonic sodium salt) have been undertaken using steady-state and time resolved fluorescence measurements on silver island films (SiFs) deposited on glass slides and silver nano-particles adsorbed onto cellulose based filter paper. Nearly a 4.5 fold enhancement in fluorescence intensity is observed from both SiFs and nano-particle deposited cellulose filter paper. In addition an enhanced photostability and decrease in decay time is also observed on SiFs. These results are consistent with two distinct mechanisms of MEF, firstly coupling and transferring of the excited states energies of fluorophores to surface plasmons in the silver island deposited glass films, and secondly, an electric field enhancement effect, which facilitates enhanced absorption of the fluorophores. Our findings reveal significant benefits of enhanced luminescence and prolonged photostability of Tinopal CBS. As such, Plasmon-tinopal constructs offer new material opportunities as well as multifarious applications in the life sciences. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Near-Infrared Fluorescence Enhancement Using Silver Island Films

Near-infrared (near-IR) excitation produces little background signal from biological molecules, making nearIR fluorescence technology highly useful in proteomic and genomic applications. To increase the emissions of near-IR fluorophores, we examined the use of metal-enhanced fluorescence on these longer wavelength dyes. IRDye700and IRDye800-labeled DNA oligonucleotides and proteins were spotted...

Effects of Metallic Nanoalloys on Dye Fluorescence

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) are exploited for their ability to interact with organic compounds and to increase significantly the fluorescence intensity and the photostability of many fluorescent dye molecules. Metal enhanced fluorescence (MEF) is therefore widely investigated for biosensing applications. When used in immunoassays, silver island films (SIFs) could augment the fluorescence inten...

Metal-enhanced fluorescence exciplex emission.

In this letter, we report the first observation of metal-enhanced exciplex fluorescence, observed from anthracene in the presence of diethylaniline. Anthracene in the presence of diethylaniline in close proximity to Silver Island Films (SIFs) shows enhanced monomer and exciplex emission as compared to a non-silvered control sample containing no silver nanoparticles. Our findings suggest two com...

Enhancement of FITC Fluorescence by Silver Colloids and Silver Island Films

Silver colloids and silver island films as fluorescence enhancement systems are the subject of this paper. Enhancement of fluorescence of molecules placed near metallic nanoparticles is a result of resonance interaction of exciting and emitted lights with surface plasmons. Two models explaining this phenomenon are presented. Processes of silver colloids and silver island films forming are descr...

Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence of Silver Island Associated with Silver Nanoparticle

The coupling plasmon of a hybrid nanostructure, silver island (SI) associated with silver nanoparticle (SNP), on metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) was studied theoretically. We used the multiple multipole method to analyze the plasmon-mediated enhancement factor on the fluorescence of a molecule immobilized on SNP and located in the gap zone between SI and SNP; herein, the SI was modeled as an ...
